David Kaczynski, brother of so-called "Unabomber," speaks at kickoff event Thursday, March 1 for National Criminal Justice Month

The Justice Center and the UAA Justice Club are co-sponsoring a series of events during March in recognition of National Criminal Justice Month. 

All events are free and open to UAA students, faculty, staff, and the public. The series will be held in the UAA/APU Consortium Library, 3rd floor, LIB 307.  Parking is free in the library surface lots.

Dr. Myrstol publishes article in "Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management"

An article by Dr. Brad Myrstol, Justice faculty, on "The Alcohol-related Workload of Patrol Officers" has been published in the current issue of Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management, Volume 35, Number 1, 2012.

The article reports findings from Dr. Myrstol's research examining the intersection of citizen alcohol use and police patrol. Topics addressed include the prevalence of alcohol-related tasks performed by patrol officers, the amount of time patrol officers dedicate to alcohol-related tasks, the nature and contextual features of alcohol-related encounters, and the characteristics of citizens involved in alcohol-related incidents.

The journal is interdisciplinary and wide-ranging in scope, covering the latest international developments in policy, practice, management, operations, education and training, science, and technology. The worldwide readership includes senior police officers and policy makers, as well as academics teaching and researching in this field.

Prof. Brandeis joins panel discussion tonight on "The Social Contract Today" at campus bookstore special event

Prof. Jason Brandeis, J.D., Justice faculty, is on the faculty panel for, "The Social Contract Today," a presentation of the  UAA Campus Bookstore Special Events Series, tonight, Monday, February 27, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Campus Bookstore.

The panel will address where we are today in America in light of new laws and rulings that challenge the rights and protections of citizens under the U.S. Constitution. Issues such as the National Defense Authorization Act, Citizens United, Wiki Leaks trial, and government control of the Internet will be highlighted.

Other faculty panelists include Dr. Alan Boraas, Department of Anthropology; Dr. Terry Kelly, Philosophy Department; and Dr. Scott Gavorsky, Department of History. Prof. Paola Banchero, Chair, Department of Journalism and Public Communications will serve as moderator.

The event is free and open to UAA students, faculty, staff, and the public.  Parking is free in the lot by the bookstore for this event.

Dr. Payne appointed UAA representative for Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research

Dr. Troy Payne, Justice faculty, has been appointed the UAA representative for the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). ICPSR is an international consortium of about 700 academic institutions and research organizations. UAA is an ICPSR member institution.  Its membership is supported and maintained by the Justice Center.

Based at the University of Michigan, ICPSR maintains a data archive of more than 500,000 files of research in the social sciences, and  hosts 16 specialized collections of data in education, aging, criminal justice, substance abuse, terrorism, and other fields.

Anyone in the UAA community can request access to and utilize ICPSR data. Dr. Payne will be sharing information about ICPSR resources with UAA faculty members and students, and will be the contact person for all UAA campus users of ICPSR data.

Dr. Rosay presents to Alaska House Finance Committee with Attorney General and Commissioners

Dr. André Rosay, Justice Center Director, will present an update on domestic violence and sexual assault programs to the Alaska House Finance Committee on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 1:30 p.m.  His co-presenters will include Lauree Morton, Executive Director of the Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Alaska Attorney General Michael Gerahty, and the Commissioners from the Alaska Department of Public Safety (Joseph Masters), Alaska Department of Corrections (Joe Schmidt), Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (William Streur), and Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (Mike Hanley).

Representative Bill Stoltze (R) and Representative Bill Thomas (R) are the co-chairs of the House Finance Committee.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Rosay will meet with the Division of Behavioral Health  of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and a group of UAF Distance Bachelor of Social Work students to discuss the Alaska Victimization Survey and its implications for policy and practice in health-related careers.

Justice Center awarded grant by Tundra Women's Coalition to evaluate teen violence prevention program

The Justice Center has been awarded a grant by the Tundra Women's Coalition to evaluate the Teens Acting Against Violence (TAAV) program.  TAAV is a violence prevention program conducted by the Tundra Women’s Coalition in Bethel, and  is committed to raising awareness about issues such as teen violence, sexual assault, abuse, and alcohol and drug abuse. Dr. André Rosay is the principal investigator for this project.

The program emphasizes leadership development, work experience, skill building, healthy activities, teen empowerment, cultural relevance, outdoor education, peer education, crisis and family work, and community awareness. The evaluation will include data about the program and staff, and a survey of past participants.

Justice Center to participate in UAF inter-university dispute resolution cyber-symposium March 7

Members of the Justice Center faculty and staff will be participating in the second annual UAF Inter-University Alternative Dispute Resolution Cyber-Symposium organized by Prof. Brian Jarrett, UAF Department of Justice scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, 12:00 noon - 2:20 p.m. (Alaska Standard Time).

Practitioners, local communities, mediator organizations, and students are invited to participate. Attendees thus far include representatives from universities and organizations around the U.S., from Canada, and from New Zealand.

Prof. Periman named as special contributor to first year student's college success

The Office of Student Affairs recently surveyed first year students and asked them: "Name the person on campus who has helped you the most in your college success." Students responded with the names of over 50 individuals, as well as departments, "my classmates," and "my sisters (aka my sorority)."

Prof. Deb Periman, J.D., Justice faculty and Coordinator of the Paralegal Studies Program, was among those recognized for their contributions to student success.  A list of some of the persons named by students appears in The Northern Light, February 14, 2012  issue.

This survey was part of MAP-Works - Making Achievement Possible, a student success and retention program used by the Office of Student Affairs.

Justice Center awarded grant to continue work on Alaska Victimization Survey measuring violence against women

The Justice Center was awarded over $350,000 in grant funding by the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA) to continue work on the Alaska Victimization Survey (AVS).  The 2012 Alaska Victimization Survey will be conducted in the Bethel Census Area, the Wade Hampton Census Area, the Kodiak Island Borough, and the City and Borough of Sitka.  Dr. André Rosay is the principal investigator for the project.

A statewide intimate partner and sexual violence victimization survey was initially conducted in 2010. The results of the 2010 survey provide the first definitive measures of the incidence and prevalence of violence against women in Alaska. A regional survey was carried out in 2011 in the Bristol Bay region, City and Borough of Juneau, City of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, and the Municipality of Anchorage.  Results of the 2010 and 2011 surveys are available on the Justice Center website.

Swedish crime investigator speaks to Prof. Wolfe's criminal investigation class

Kjell Carlsson, a retired forensic scientist for the Stockholm Police Crime Lab and the Swedish National Crime Lab, spoke to Prof. Jim Wolfe's JUST 255 Criminal Investigation class at the end of January.  Mr. Carlsson described Swedish criminal investigation techniques using case examples involving shoe print and tool mark evidence. He has also developed a technique for casting snow impressions using a new type of plaster.  Mr. Carlsson took advantage of  the exceptionally cold snow conditions Alaska was experiencing this winter to experiment and demonstrate his technique.  He has over 40 years of experience in criminal investigation.

While in the state, Mr. Carlsson also lectured with Prof. Wolfe at a course hosted by the State Crime Lab and the Alaska Police Standards Council, "Documenting and Collecting Snow Impression Evidence." Attendees included staff from the Alaska Crime Lab, Wildlife Troopers, State Fire Marshall's Office, and the Anchorage Airport Police.

Prof. Deb Periman, J.D., Paralegal Studies Program Coordinator, and Dr. Ron Everett, Justice Program Coordinator, met with visiting high school students and their parents at Preview Days held on Friday, February 3 in the Student Union.

Junior and senior high school students from around Anchorage attended workshops and mini-classes and also talked with representatives from academic departments about the majors and programs at UAA. This half-day event is held each Fall and Spring.

Prof. Brandeis joins faculty response panel for CAFE debate on corporate personhood

Prof. Jason Brandeis, J.D., Justice faculty, was a member of the faculty response panel for the CAFE debate held February 2 on the topic: "The U.S. should adopt a Constitutional Amendment banning corporate personhood."  The award-winning UAA Speech and Debate Team  argued the issue, which was followed by a facilitated public discussion, and the faculty response.

This event was part of a series of debates and discussions that has been sponsored since 2003 by CAFE - the UAA Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence - as a way to bring together university resources and the Anchorage community in discussions of policies and issues affecting its future.  Prof. Brandeis also participated on the faculty response panel for the Fall 2010 CAFE public policy debate.

Prof. Jarrett of UAF Justice Department speaks to Justice Center faculty about integral mediation

Prof. Brian Jarrett, J.D., UAF Justice Department faculty, spoke to the Justice Center faculty on January 27 about integral mediation and the upcoming second annual alternative dispute resolution cyberconference.  Integral mediation encourages participants in the mediation process to look at the variety of mediation styles available and to adapt and utilize strategies from all these approaches to reach a resolution of the issues.  Mediation styles include evaluative, interest-based/facilitative, transformative, and narrative.

This year's Cyber-Symposium on Dispute Resolution is scheduled for March 7, 2012 from 12 noon AK Standard Time to 2:20 p.m. The format will be an informal town-hall discussion. University faculty, students, staff, practitioners, local communities, and mediator organizations are invited.  For information on participating, go to the UAF Justice Department website.

The complete title of the cyber-symposium is "Inter-University Cyber-Symposium on Dispute Resolution, Restorative, and Therapeutic Practices," and the theme for 2012 is "Integrating Theory and Practice."

Participants for the 2011 cyberconference included representatives from the University of Hawaii, Simon Fraser University, Salisbury University, University of Florida, University of Maryland, and the Northern Institute of Social Justice - Yukon College, among others.
