Justice Center faculty Ryan Fortson, Kristin Knudsen and Troy Payne received recognition for receiving tenure from Interim UAA Provost Duane Hrncir at the College of Health All-College meeting on Thursday, August 17. The three Justice faculty, who were all promoted to Associate Professor, were the most faculty from one department in the College of Health to be awarded tenure this year. Prof. Fortson and Prof. Knudsen teach in the Justice Center's Legal Studies program. Prof. Knudsen is Legal Studies Coordinator. Dr. Payne, teaches Justice courses and is the Undergraduate Justice Coordinator. All three were granted tenure in May 2017 by then Provost, now Interim Chancellor, Sam Gingerich.

Faculty promotions in Justice Center

The Justice Center congratulates our faculty on receiving the following promotions effective July 1, 2015:


Prof. Deb Periman, J.D., Legal Studies Program Coordinator in the Justice Center, was recently promoted to Professor of Justice.  Professor Periman is also the Legal Studies Program Coordinator.  Her areas of focus are legal writing, regulation of nonlawyer professionals and unauthorized practice of law, and collateral consequences of criminal convictions/offender reentry.

Prof. Jason Brandeis, J.D., Legal Studies faculty in the Justice Center, recently received promotion  to Associate Professor of Justice with tenure. His areas of focus are civil liberties, constitutional law, legal education, and marijuana law and policy.

Dr. Myrstol awarded promotion and tenure

Dr. Brad Myrstol

Dr. Brad Myrstol, Justice Center faculty and director of the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center (AJSAC), has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and awarded tenure in the Justice Center in the UAA College of Health effective July 1.

Dr. Myrstol holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Indiana University and has been a Justice Center faculty member since 2009. Click here for a list of his recent research.

Dr. Marny Rivera, Justice Center faculty, received her certificate of  promotion to the rank of Associate Professor and award of tenure in the UAA College of Health at the 2011 UAA Faculty and Staff Convocation held September 16 at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium.

Dr. Rivera holds a Ph.D. in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been a Justice Center faculty member since 2007.

Dr. Rivera holds a Ph.D. in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been a Justice Center faculty member since 2007.

Dr. Chamard awarded tenure

Dr. Sharon Chamard, Justice Center faculty, has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and awarded tenure in the UAA College of Health and Social Welfare. Dr. Chamard holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers-Newark and has been a Justice Center faculty member since 2003.
