New APCAAA scholarship — $1000 min.— deadline Feb. 15

APCAAA Scholarship
New Anchorage Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association Scholarship for students enrolled at UAA in Bachelor of Arts in Justice or Legal Studies or Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies. $1,000 per academic year (minimum) is now available. Justice major receives 3rd $1,000 law enforcement scholarship

Justice major Lena Illig has received a $1,000 Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) college scholarship for the third year in a row.  She is featured in the August 19 UAA electronic newsletter, Green & Gold Digest.

Lena's goal is to become an Alaska State Trooper and ultimately to work for the FBI. The LEEP scholarship is presented to students interested in pursuing a career in public safety and all of its related fields — law enforcement, police-fire dispatch, corrections officer, firefighting or emergency medical technicians (EMT).

She is an employee of Aviation Medical Services of Alaska, and is also an on-call volunteer with the Anchorage Police Department Search Team. Lena completed the 6-week Anchorage Police Department Citizens Academy, and is a graduate of the Alaska Military Youth Academy (AMYA).

The Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to public safety research and education with a focus on child safety. LEEP was founded in 1997 and expanded nationally in 2004 to reach children and teens throughout the country.

Justice major awarded $20,000 scholarship from National Guard Youth Foundation

Lena Illig, Justice major, was recently awarded a $20,000 scholarship from the National Guard Youth Foundation and was named a Youth ChalleNGe Ambassador. Lena spoke to members of Congress at a luncheon in Washington, D.C., in February and described how her experience attending the Alaska Youth Military Academy gave her a "second chance in life."  The Alaska Youth Military Academy administers the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program in Alaska for at-risk young people.

Lena's goal is to become an Alaska State Trooper.  She credits the Alaska Youth Military Academy with helping her get back on track and into college.  In addition to pursuing a degree in Justice, Lena also volunteers with Standing Together Against Rape (STAR), Planned Parenthood, and the Anchorage Police Department Auxiliary Search Team.

The National Guard Youth Foundation provides programs and assistance across the country for youth who have dropped out of school.

Justice major does personal fundraising to offer scholarship through Anchorage Police Auxiliary Search Team

Lena Illig, Justice major, has been a member of the Anchorage Police Department (APD) Auxiliary Search Team for two years.  The primary mission of the search team is to assist APD in locating and rendering aid to persons reported lost or missing within the APD service district. The search team is an all volunteer, non-profit corporation.

Through fundraising that Lena did, the APD Auxiliary Search Team is now offering a $250 scholarship to students seeking a degree in Justice, Legal Studies, Emergency Services, Fire Safety, or a related field.  Lena plans to continue fundraising for the APD Search Team scholarship program.

UAA Justice major is first student to receive Law Enforcement Education Program scholarship 2 years in a row

Justice major Lena Illig is the first person to receive a $1,000 Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) college scholarship two years in a row.  She is featured in an Anchorage Daily News article published online August 1 and in the August 5 UAA electronic newsletter, Green & Gold Digest.

Lena's goal is to become an Alaska State Trooper. This year, she is one of 21 top students awarded the scholarship by LEEP's professional public safety officers. The LEEP scholarship is presented to students interested in pursuing a career in public safety and all of its related fields — law enforcement, police-fire dispatch, corrections officer, firefighting or emergency medical technicians (EMT).

Tuition waivers for Spring 2011 semester


A limited number of Justice Center tuition waivers for the Spring 2011 semester are being offered. Completed application forms must be delivered to the Justice Center office, Consortium Library Room 213, by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, January 13, 2011. No faxes or e-mails are accepted.

Fall 2010 tuition waivers

The Justice Center will be offering a limited number of tuition waivers for the Fall 2010 semester. Justice Center tuition waivers are awarded to recognize the student(s) who best represents those qualities we would most like to encourage in our students. These qualities include academic excellence and a willingness and ability to contribute to the field of justice and the program at UAA. Consideration may also be given to student financial need and affirmative action goals.
Note: There are a limited number of tuition waiver credits awarded each academic year. Awarded tuition waiver credits may not cover 100% of tuition costs.

Eligibility
  • Must be an official justice major or officially admitted to the paralegal studies certificate program
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher
  • Must have completed a minimum of 12 credits in the justice major or paralegal studies program
Justice Center tuition waiver applications can be picked up in the Justice Center office (Consortium Library, Suite 213) or an application can be filled out and printed online at: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/justice/finaid.cfm.

All applications must be submitted to the Justice Center office no later than 5:00pm on Monday, August 30, 2010.

Students who have been selected to receive a Fall 2010 tuition waiver will be contacted by September 2, 2010.

Spring 2010 tuition waiver

Also attach a typewritten statement in which you explain why you feel you should be granted this tuition waiver. Your statement should include such things as quality classroom participation or presentations, research projects, internships, special projects, Justice Club and/or Alpha Phi Sigma activities, Student Showcase participation, and nature of your need if applicable. You may also present indicators of contributions to the Justice field and community and any other information about yourself which you feel supports your request for the tuition waiver.

Application deadline

All applications must be submitted to the Justice Center office no later than 5:00pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Students who have been selected to receive a Spring 2010 tuition waiver, will be contacted by Friday, January 22, 2010. Justice Center hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, unless otherwise posted.

Academic information online for the Fall 2009 semester includes a complete list of Justice Center Fall 2009 course offerings and course syllabi.

See faculty office hours for faculty email addresses and phone numbers. If you don't know who your advisor is, call our main line 786-1810, and we'll provide you with that information. We cannot, however, set appointments for you: you must schedule directly with your advisor or instructor.

Don’t forget we have a computer lab for Justice Center students open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (closed on holidays) located in our office suite, Library 213.

Vincent W. & Mary Root Outstanding Paralegal Student Award

The Vincent W. Root and Mary Root estates donated funds to the UAA Paralegal Studies Certificate Program sufficient to establish an ongoing scholarship award for its outstanding students. The Vincent W. & Mary Root Outstanding Paralegal Student Award will be given in the amount of $500 to a student selected by the Paralegal Scholarship Committee, comprised of members of the Paralegal Studies Program’s Advisory Board.

Note: Although the application materials gives an application deadline of Friday, March 13, 2009, the Justice Center will be closed on March 13 for Spring Break. Therefore, applications should be turned to the Justice Center no later than 5:00 PM on Thursday, March 12.
