Childhood trauma expert, Dr. Robert Anda, co-investigator of the Centers for Disease Control Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, spoke to over 100 students and community members at UAA on October 23. Dr. Anda described the ACE study and ways the University can help address critical issues related to child maltreatment.

This interactive presentation included a panel discussion with Dr. David Driscoll, Associate Dean for Research, and Director, Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, UAA College of Health, and Elizabeth Ripley, Executive Director, Mat-Su Health Foundation. Dean Bill Hogan of the UAA College of Health was the moderator.

Dr. Myrstol interviewed by Anchorage Daily News about understanding crime rates

Dr. Brad Myrstol, Justice faculty and Director of the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center, was interviewed by the Anchorage Daily News for the article, "Police: Anchorage crime down over last three decades," by Casey Grove published October 17, 2012.

The article discusses the FBI's Uniform Crime Rate data for Anchorage and includes an interview with Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew.  Dr. Myrstol outlines some of the difficulties in collecting and interpreting crime statistics, and the impact news coverage can have on the community's perception of the level of crime.

Dr. Payne presents at campus bookstore special event on researching police use of force

Dr. Troy Payne, Justice faculty, was a panelist for the Campus Bookstore event, "Force and Enforcement: A Panel Discussion" on October 2. Dr. Payne, whose research includes community problem-solving, discussed the difficulties in researching the use of lethal and non-lethal police force, and the issues involved in collecting data on these incidents.

Other panelists were Dr. Kim Patterson, Director, UAA Student Support Services, and the author of Swift Justice: Leveling the Playing Field for America’s Re-entry Citizens, who focused on the need to review current police policies regarding use of force, and reporter Casey Grove, Anchorage Daily News, who discussed reporting on the recent use of police force incidents in Anchorage.

Victimization survey results show that over half of adult women in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have experienced intimate partner violence or sexual violence or both

The results of the 2012 Victimization Survey for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta were released at a press conference on October 22 in Bethel.  The troubling numbers show that:

• Over half of adult women in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in their lifetime;
•  Nearly 17% have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence or both, in the past year;
• One out of every four adult women in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime; and 
• More than four out of every 10 have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

The survey was designed to measure the lifetime and past year exposure to sexual violence and intimate partner violence. It was conducted from March to May 2012 in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta through a contract with the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA), with supplemental funding from the Governor's Choose Respect initiative to end the epidemic of domestic violence and sexual assault in Alaska. "Public Perceptions of Judicial Fairness" by Brad A. Myrstol and Cory R. Lepage

Despite the prominent role played by local courts in the justice system, research investigating public perceptions of local courts is scarce. This article uses data from the 2009 Anchorage Community Survey to examines public perceptions of judicial fairness in Alaska criminal courts.

"'Bring the Kids Home': Alaska Community-Based Treatment for Children and Youth" by Barbara Armstrong

For a long time, children and youth in Alaska with severe emotional disturbances and challenging behaviors had few in-state options for treatment, most often being sent to out-of-state residential psychiatric treatment facilities. The Alaska Youth Initiative and the creation of more community-based services improved the situation in the 1980s, but by the late 1990s, the number of children sent out of state for treatment was again on the rise. This article described the Bring the Kids Home Initiative, launched in 2004 to address these circumstances and to develop a more cohesive system of in-state services.

"Criminal Justice Working Group Update"

A summary of current work being conducted by the Criminal Justice Working Group (CWCG): a pilot electronic discovery project in Juneau; a study of how court-appointed counsel in criminal cases are appointed; therapeutic DUI courts; the Prisoner Re-Entry Task Force; recidivism; and case management systems. CWCG is coordinated and staffed by the Alaska Judicial Council.

Drs. Garcia and Rivera present on community measurement methods to Division of Behavioral Health grantees

Dr. Marny Rivera, Justice faculty, and Dr. Gabe Garcia, Department of Health Sciences, co-presented at an Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health Annual Behavioral Health Prevention Grantee Meeting on September 28 in Anchorage. The meeting was a 3-day opportunity for information gathering, knowledge transfer, skill development, networking and cross-grantee communication for Division of Behavioral Health grantees.

Dr. Rivera and Dr. Garcia presented a hands-on workshop, "Getting to Know Your Community: Measurement Methods Made Easy."  They introduced grantees to 1) quantitative and qualitative research skills to assist in identifying problems in their communities, 2) ways to demonstrate if there has been improvement in the problems by addressing factors related to those problems, and  3) how to make sense of the information collected about their communities in order to share what they learn with others. Attendees worked alone or in small groups to identify a real world problem and develop a research question.

Prof. Kristin Knudsen, J.D., Justice faculty, shared advanced legal research techniques and strategies with attendees at the 2012 National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) conference in Anchorage on Thursday, September 27.

Her presentation included a discussion of the science of information, the distinctions between legal information and legal research, methods of planning legal research, and the unique aspects of researching in Alaska.

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations, founded in 1974, is the first national paralegal association to be established in the U.S.

Drs. Rivera and Lepage to conduct survey of crime victims under U.S. Office for Victims of Crime grant

Dr. Marny Rivera and Dr. Cory Lepage, Justice faculty, will be research partners with the Alaska Victim Legal Assistance Network under a grant awarded by the U.S. Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). Dr. Rivera and Dr. Lepage will develop and conduct a survey of crime victims to determine the legal needs that have arisen in connection with their victimization.  The Alaska Victim Legal Assistance Network members will then provide assistance and services that are identified by the needs assessment.

The grant project is scheduled to begin November 1, 2012. Alaska Victim Legal Assistance Network partner agencies and key stakeholders include: Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC), Alaska Immigration Justice Project (AIJP), Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (ANDVSA), UAA Justice Center, Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA), Alaska Office of Victims' Rights (OVR), Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC), Alaska Violent Crimes Compensation Board (VCCB), Alaska Department of Health and Social Services - Alaska Family Violence Prevention Project (AFVPP), Alaska Department of Law Consumer Protection Unit (DOL), and Municipality of Anchorage Prosecutors Office.

The Alaska public safety officials discussed the  "The Alaska Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) Program," and Dr. Rosay was a member of the panel.

Justice Center affiliate faculty member, Dr. Darryl Wood of Washington State University Vancouver, was a co-panelist with Katie TePas for a discussion on "The Dynamics of Justice in Northern and Remote Communities: A Research and Policy Perspective."

The goal of the symposium was to help "identify gaps and priorities for policing in northern and remote communities where many unique challenges exist." A Canadian national research agenda on policing in these areas will be developed based on the perspectives and information presented at the conference. Click here for details on the event.


The event was hosted by the Government of the Yukon in partnership with the Council of Yukon First Nations, the Northern Institute of Social Justice, Government of the Northwest Territories, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) M Division and National Headquarters, and Public Safety Canada.

October is domestic violence awareness month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Check out the "1 is 2 Many" site and access resources for teens, young adults, and parents about preventing dating violence.

Two from the Justice Center receive 10-year service recognition awards at faculty/staff convocation

Dr. André Rosay, Justice Center Professor and currently a Visiting Executive Research Fellow with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in Washington, D.C., and Alan McKelvie, Senior Research Associate with the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center (AJSAC)  housed at the Justice Center, each received recognition of 10-years of service to UAA at the Faculty/Staff Convocation on September 21.

Justice Center, College of Health, Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, Dept. of Health Sciences, and School of Social Work among sponsors of 2012 Alaska Child Maltreatment Conference

The UAA Justice Center, College of Health, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Department of Health Sciences, and the School of Social Work are among the sponsors of the Alaska Children's Alliance 2012 Alaska Child Maltreatment Conference to be held October 22-24 at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.  The theme of this year's conference is "Respect & Protect."

Robert Anda, M.D., M.S., co-founder and co-principal investigator of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Adverse Experiences (ACEs) Study, is a keynote speaker. Dr. Anda is a nationally recognized expert and is the author of over 200 publications.

The conference is presented by the Alaska Children's Alliance, a member of the National Children's Alliance. The Alaska Children's Alliance was established in 2004 with the mission to promote statewide multidisciplinary teams to serve maltreated children and their families in a culturally appropriate way. The Alliance provides training and technical assistance, including the Alaska Child Maltreatment Conference.
