Law Related Education (LRE) Committee and is modeled on youth law guides developed by the California and Montana State Bars. Over 25 Alaska Bar members have volunteered to write brief summaries of Alaska law for the guide. The LRE Committee is made up of Alaska Bar members and Alaska educators.
Chapter headings are "Law Enforcement," "Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll," "Entering the 'Real World'," "Cars and Guns," "Family Life," "School Days," and "The Courts." A partial list of topics include: curfews; encounters with police; alcohol, drugs, and tobacco; sexual activity; work and taxes; money: contracts, bank accounts, credit cards; age of majority and emancipation; driving; guns and weapons; parents' rights, marriage and divorce; child abuse; health care; student rights; compulsory education and truancy; student privacy; lawsuits; voting and jury duty; rural justice systems and tribal courts.
There will be a gradual rollout on the web starting in the fall 2011 as chapters become available. There are plans for a printed hard copy once the guide is complete.
